Great Cultural Event Before School Starts!

Grand Rapids Sister Cities International is excited to bring Paco Padilla and his group, from Tlaquepaque, Mexico and the Pre-Columbian dancers from the Basilica of Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, as part of the Sister Cities International global outreach program.

This historic event marks the beginning of promoting and expanding cultural exchanges with Grand Rapids newest Sister City, Zapopan, Mexico.

A renowned Mexican musician and artist, Paco Padilla is a native son of Tlaquepaque, in the Mexican state of Jalisco. Born into a family of potters and introduced to the craft of pottery through his father’s shop, Paco Padilla is also an internationally acclaimed composer and performer of the modern Mexican folk music-inspired genre known as "nueva cancion"--"new song."

Padilla has been with his two lead guitarists, Raul Rodriguez and Enrique Ortiz, for 25 years. The other band members have been with him for a decade. With performances around the world, Padilla’s art keeps alive this unique form of Spanish-language.

Muchas gracias to all of you who attended, donated, and/or worked to make our first ever Community Fiesta Night a success! We ate tamales, arroz con frijoles, totopos y salsa, fruta and pastel de tres leches! ¡Qué delicioso! Los Opuestos

Kindergarten and 1st grade students have been learning about opposite words...so have Señora Brouwer's high school students! We've enjoyed making videos for each other and watching them in our classes. Here are a few highlights!

Telling a story, our story, THE story...

I loved listening to the stories that were shared at the Rose Park program last night! The students did a beautiful job sharing them with us, and I loved their excitement for sharing THE story in Spanish! It's a blessing to be a part of the Rose Park community where these stories are cherished and celebrated!

Ciao, Paula

Paula, who is from Argentina, has been an exchange student at the high school this year. She has been our special guest speaker twice in 3rd and 4th grades. We learned a lot about Argentina from her (like the fact that there are penguins and the seasons are opposite ours). Paula also helped with 3DZ/H and 3W once a week at Pine Ridge. This Friday she returns to Argentina. (The new school year is starting there now!) We thank her very much for helping us and we pray that God may bless her always! ¡GRACIAS POR TODO, PAULA!
